Royal Ascot III v Amersham III

Morrant Thames Valley Cricket League − Division 7b

Royal Ascot III 179-8 (52 ovs; David McKay 4−?)

Amersham III 179 (48 ovs; Glen Saffrey 50, Shamil Mubarak 38)

    Match tied

At the start of the day, eighteen points would make the league title certain.

Amersham won the toss and inserted Royal Ascot. Ascot scored 179-8 off 52 overs, D McKay 4-.

Amersham's reply started very hesitantly and three quick wickets went down to put them in trouble at 25-3. However, opener Shamil Mubarak dug in and he and Glen Saffery pulled things back on course until Shamil was out for 38 to make it 86-4. Glen continued to bat very responsibly to reach what proved to be a match-saving 50. But when he was bowled to leave the score at 110-5 there was still a long way to go.

Bowlers to the rescue! Matt Clark ran some hair-raising singles to push things along and then David Sidebottom and David McKay made a mockery of the batting order to put on 55 for the eighth wicket. McKay hit a four over mid-wicket to level the scores on 179 but one run from four balls proved too much in the gloom as McKay, Andrew Smith and Chris Richards fell without any further scoring: a tie!

The fifteen points secured promotion and eventually the result from Farnham Common confirmed that it was also enough to take first place.

CAMPIONES!!!!!

Phew, what a scorcher! Still a bit to do before we're there. Have you noticed that the 2s and 3s are in almost exactly the same position: 4 games left, 30pts ahead of second, 33 pts ahead of third, with second and third having to play each other. Interesting or what?

Amersham (inserted) 226-3 (D Mackintosh 126 n.o.) from 46 overs, Marlow 221-6. We nearly blew it, dropping a few catches, but T. Aylott bowled 4 dots in the last over, before the batsman collapsed in agony with a twisted knee on the fifth ball. He couldn't be moved and an ambulance was called. They needed six off the last ball so we agreed to call it a draw. Exciting stuff!
