With each of the three Amersham league sides basking in glow of a successful season the final Saturday fixture of the year was eagerly awaited by all as a chance to finally leave all bar-room debate on the boundary and settle a few scores with bat and ball. After electing to bat first on a surface assisting the bowlers the 1st XI were given a flying start by makeshift pinch-hitter David Atkinson (7 off 22 balls). Once Atkinson fell to the persistent Hanook Gill, Rich Stephenson (60) and Chris Owen (41) made more sedate progress, frequently playing and missing against the lavish movement extracted by the 2nd XI attack but taking sufficient calculated risks to find the boundary regularly. Both batsmen fell attempting to increase the scoring rate, but their 86 run partnership on the testing wicket would prove decisive. Niall Densely (15) and Dan "Nemo" Colquhoun (22*) took the 1st XI to a competitive total of 190-6 from the allotted 40 overs. For the 2nd XI, Mustapha Rajabali returned the most economical figures from his eight overs with 1-27. Having been rested for the final two league games of the season in preparation for this fixture, Tom Dixon tore into the 2nd XI batting with a fine opening spell. Evidently without full confidence in his teammates' catching abilities, Dixon induced two return catches during his accurate spell of 2-28. Buoyed by his 1st XI debut the previous week, James Harmer also used the new ball effectively, maintaining a tight line to the array of left-handers fielded by the 2nd XI and picking up the key wicket of Danny Bulman. The 1st XI then turned again to spinners David Atkinson (2-17) and Nick Moore (1-23) to squeeze the run-rate on the slow wicket. Once the dangerous Paul Weston (22) fell to Atkinson the game was won by the 1st XI despite a determined unbeaten knock of 39 from Glenn Saffery. Bar-room debate was resumed. |
