Amersham produced a much improved performance in this encounter with local rivals High Wycombe II and a late surge left them just short of claiming their first league win of the year. Batting first, Amersham reached an imposing 252-7 from their 50 overs. Rich Stephenson and Chris Owen consolidated after the openers were dismissed early and laid a platform for the impatient middle order with a 103 run partnership. Luke Jackson then tore into the Wycombe bowling on his way to a destructive fifty, well supported by the flashing blades of Todd Kruger and Chris Sowden. With the pitch taking spin, Amersham opened up with slow men Mustapha Rajabali and David Atkinson who strangled the Wycombe reply expertly. After the belatedly taken new ball had accounted for the stubborn top order, Atkinson and off-spinner Jackson shared eight wickets as Wycombe struggled with rising required run-rate. After being unable to separate the the final pair, Amersham were left to rue several earlier missed chances. |
