| | Amersham 2nds got the 2006 league campaign off to a good start with an ultimately comfortable win at Shardeloes. The visitors won the toss and elected to bat against arguably one of the strongest 2nd XI teams fielded by Amersham for some time. Looking keen and very professional in their new club kit the Amersham side took the field with a real sense of purpose and determination. Openers Danny Bulman, making a welcome return to the Amersham colours, and James Harmer quickly settled into an excellent opening spell and it was clear early on that the M&B batsmen were going to have a difficult afternoon. Neither of the opening batsmen were ever able to make much impression and Harmer was rewarded by trapping Wilding (18) lbw with the score on 27. Bulman, by now well into a long spell, was then well supported by Tom Dixon and both picked up wickets at regular intervals to finish with 3 well deserved victims apiece, backed up by some excellent ground fielding though sadly not always the safest of hands (mentioning no names skipper!!). Hanook Gill and Harmer then polished off the tail to leave Amersham needing a simple looking total to chase. In reply openers Ben Langley and Weston batted comfortably to take the score to 37 before Weston became the first of several Amersham batsmen to lose their wickets to early season shots and at 74-5 the vistors were possibly back in the game. The depth of the Amersham batting line was then revealed and the left handed duo of Ian Rogers (27no) and Glen Saffery then calmed the nerves and batted sensibly to see Amersham home without further alarm. |
